After a couple of weeks of unseasonal rain, the skies cleared for the most perfect Copperlode Cup Run weather one could ask for! Crisp and cool to start, sun filtering through the trees on the way up, gentle fog over Cairns, and balmy and breezy at the top.

A great event, this one. Made possible as always by the many hands involved in the lead up and on the day. Special mentions to Ian Kraska (finish line coordinator), Chris Simmons (trailer), Mark St Amand (lead vehicle), Brenda O’Brien (amenities), Leesa Hansen, Kev Morrisey, Keith Fearon (timing), Pam Palmer (waterstop marshall), Margie Simpson (great spread of fresh fruit), and Glen Robinson (pre-race planning & permits). Thanks everyone!

A mix of runners in the field: some speeding to the top, some out to better previous times, and others just enjoying the runners-only road, taking in the beautiful sights, sounds, and scents of Dinden National Park.

2016 Copperlode Winners

Top honours go to Damien Coad, Chris White, and Robert McWilliams (1st, 2nd & 3rd Male, all crossing the line within a minute) and Alena Scurrah, Alison Smith, and Michelle Farkas (1st, 2nd & 3rd Female, Alena 3 minutes ahead of Alison and Michelle who sprinted across the line only a second between them!).

All place-getters took home lovely stemless wineglasses, skillfully etched with CRR logo and event and placing detail. To be enjoyed with liquid of choice (water, wine, Gatorade) or placed with pride on the trophy shelf. Alena and Damian have also won the Copperlode Cup Perpetual Trophies, which will have their names and race times engraved, along with all other race winners since 1988.

Well done to all participants and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events, or back again for this one in 2017.
